The Fungistatic and Fungicidal Effects of the Fatty Acids on Species of Trichophyton *

چکیده

During World War II, the number of infections caused by the dermatophytes reached alarming heights in the armed forces. This fact stimulated the search for agents that could not only inhibit the fungi but also kill them. Therefore, in investigating chemotherapeutic agents, both fungistatic and fungicidal activity must be examined, and to accomplish this, standard in vitro methods must be employed that eliminate as many variables as possible. Species and strains must be examined to ascertain if the difference in susceptibility to the agent precludes the use of a single species or strain of standard resistance for the test organism. The present studies represent an attempt to devise satisfactory methods for fungistatic and fungicidal tests, using the fatty acids as the anti-fungal agent, and to study the relative susceptibilities of several species and strains of fungi to these agents. Peck and Rosenfeld29 demonstrated the fungistatic action of various fatty acids against Trichophyton gypseum. Keeney and Brayles'8 investigated the fungistatic and fungicidal action of sodium propionate and pointed out that this salt was fungistatic for both Trichophyton gypseum and Trichophyton purpureum, although at different concentrations, but fungicidal for Trichophyton purpureum alone. In 1941, Cowles' had demonstrated that as the pH was lowered increased bactericidal action was exhibited by the fatty acids, and that at any fixed pH level the effective concentrations of the series varied according to Traube's rule. Kirby et al.23 concluded that the disinfecting property of acetic acid against molds was a function of pH. To see if the observations of Cowles held true for the dermatophytes a number of experiments were undertaken. The fungistatic and fungicidal action of the series of fatty acids from formic acid to caprylic acid in the saturated series was investigated originally, pelargonic acid

Sertaconazole nitrate shows fungicidal and fungistatic activities against Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Epidermophyton floccosum, causative agents of tinea pedis.

The fungistatic and fungicidal activities of sertaconazole against dermatophytes were evaluated by testing 150 clinical isolates of causative agents of tinea pedis, Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Epidermophyton floccosum. The overall geometric means for fungistatic and fungicidal activities of sertaconazole against these isolates were 0.26 and 2.26 μg/ml, respectively, al...

Effects of pentachloronitrobenzene and some of its known and possible metabolites on fungi.

Fungicidal activities of pentachloronitrobenzene and derivatives were tested with Candida albicans, Aspergillus fumigatus, Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, and Microsporon canis. In relation to pentachloronitrobenzene, no increasing fungistatic activities were found with cysteine derivatives. Rising fungistatic activities were seen with pentachlorophenylmethylsulfone and, in so...

Comparison of the Effect of Amino Acids and Their Derivatives on the Growth of Some Dermatophytes: An In Vitro Study

Background and Aims: Amino acids have different effects on the growth of some dermatophytes. Some may increase whereas others maydecrease their growth. The concentration of some amino acids is also an important factor for their effects. Materials and Methods: To investigate the effects of L-amino acids on the growth of six species of dermatophytes including Epidermophyton floccosum, Microspor...

Mixturs of quaternary ammonium compounds and long-chain fatty acids as antifungal agents.

The influence of undecylenic acid on the fungistatic effect of phenoxyethyldimethyldodecylammonium bromide (Domiphen bromide) against Trichophyton mentagrophytes was investigated. The unsaturated fatty acid was found to enhance the fungistatic activity of Domiphen bromide against this organism. The ratio of concentrations of these agents has a marked influence on the results of in vitro tests f...

Effects of penconazole on hormonal crosstalk and fatty acids from salt-stressed safflower

Salinity of soil is a major abiotic stress limiting the crop production and growth of safflower. To mitigate stress, the effects of penconazole (PEN) on the growth of safflower were studied to understand the underlying mechanisms of salt tolerance. PEN, a triazole derivative, which has both fungicidal and plant growth regulator properties, protects plants from several types of abiotic stresses....
